DescriptionThe Bureau of Agriculture and Fisheries Standards (BAFS) of the Department of Agriculture is mandated to develop and promote standards to ensure food safety, quality, workers' health and welfare, environmental management, and global competitiveness of Philippine agriculture and fishery products.
The Bureau of Agriculture and Fisheries Standards (BAFS) under the Department of Agriculture was established in December 1997 as specifically provided for by Republic Act No. 8435 or the Agriculture and Fisheries Modernization Act of 1997. Section 30 - Declaration of Policy states that all sectors involved in the production, processing, distribution and marketing of food and non-food agriculture and fishery products shall adhere to, and implement the use of product standards in order to ensure consumer safety and promote the competitiveness of these commodities.
BAFS’ major duties include formulating and enforcing standards of quality in the processing, preservation, packaging, labeling, importation, exportation, distribution and advertising of fresh, primary and secondary-processed agricultural and fisheries products. It provides assistance in establishing scientific basis for food safety, trade standards and codes of practice, and harmonizes them with internationally-accepted standards and practices. BAFS also serves as the National Technical and Administrative Secretariat to the National Organic Agriculture Board (NOAB).
